Commercial refrigeration rebates

Energy-efficient commercial fridges, freezers, display cabinets and cool rooms are some of the most-supported business upgrades in Australia. Here's how commercial refrigeration rebates work in 2026 — through the NSW, Victorian and SA energy efficiency schemes — what qualifies, and whether a "free fridge" is really free.

2026 update

The certificate schemes have shifted toward remote refrigerated cabinets — the kind run off a separate condensing unit — which now carry a customer co-payment in NSW and SA, so they're discounted rather than free. Self-contained plug-in display fridges have largely moved outside the schemes (Victoria placed plug-in cabinet incentives under review). Genuine support is still available, but it's more targeted than the "free fridge for everyone" era — so it's worth knowing which path fits before you buy. If you just need a plug-in display fridge or freezer, we can still supply one (delivery to metro Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide).

How commercial refrigeration rebates work

Commercial fridge and freezer rebates in Australia aren't cash grants. They come from state energy efficiency schemes that oblige energy retailers to fund efficiency upgrades. An accredited provider installs an eligible high-efficiency unit, creates the tradeable certificates the upgrade generates, and passes part of that value back to your business as a discount on the price. There's usually no government form for you to lodge — the saving is built into the quote.

Because the schemes are state-run, what's available depends on where your business is. The three programs that actively support commercial refrigeration are the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS), Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) and South Australia's REPS. The size of the discount depends on how much energy the new unit saves compared with what it replaces — so the bigger and thirstier the old equipment, the more the upgrade is typically worth.

Equipment

What commercial refrigeration qualifies

  • Display fridges & drinks cabinets — single and multi-door glass-door display fridges for shops, cafés and bottle shops, where the unit is on the GEMS register.
  • Upright & under-counter fridges — solid-door storage and prep fridges used in commercial kitchens and food service.
  • Upright & chest freezers — commercial freezers for retail and hospitality storage.
  • Cool rooms & walk-in freezers — supported in some states, often through project-based or metered methods rather than a simple deemed activity.
Common exclusions: units with four-sided or island display areas are generally excluded, and the model must be listed on the federal GEMS register. Most activities also require you to be replacing existing refrigeration, not fitting out an empty site or adding fridges a business doesn't need.

Remote cabinets vs plug-in: what the schemes fund now

There are two broad types of commercial refrigeration, and in 2026 they're treated very differently:

Remote cabinets

Run off a separate (remote) condensing unit — common in supermarkets and larger fit-outs. These are now the focus of certificate support in NSW and SA, but with a customer co-payment, so they're heavily discounted rather than free, and tied to replacing existing refrigeration.

Plug-in (self-contained) cabinets

The familiar glass-door display fridge or drinks fridge that plugs straight into a power point. These have largely moved outside the certificate schemes — Victoria placed plug-in incentives under review, and NSW and SA now centre on remote cabinets.

In short: if you're after a large remote system there may be scheme support with a co-payment, and if you want a standard plug-in display fridge or freezer the certificate "free fridge" route has mostly closed — but you can still buy a quality unit through us.

Is a "free commercial fridge" really free?

"Free fridge" advertising is everywhere, and the honest answer in 2026 is: mostly not anymore. The certificate schemes that once made small display fridges effectively free have shifted toward remote cabinets, which now carry a customer co-payment in NSW and SA — so they're heavily discounted, not free. Self-contained plug-in display fridges have largely fallen outside the schemes altogether.

That doesn't mean you can't get a good deal. A heavily discounted, high-efficiency remote system still pays for itself through lower running costs, and if you simply need a plug-in display fridge or freezer, we can supply one to metro Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The realistic question isn't "is it free?" — it's "what's my out-of-pocket cost, and what will it save me?" We'll give you a straight answer for your exact site and equipment.

Refrigeration runs around the clock, so it's often the single largest slice of a food or retail business's power bill. That's exactly why the schemes reward efficient units — and why retailers, hospitality venues and food service operators are the businesses that benefit most. Pair a fridge upgrade with LED lighting and efficient HVAC and the combined saving on a typical shop or venue can be substantial.

FAQ

Commercial refrigeration rebate questions

Yes. Energy-efficient commercial refrigeration is a supported activity under the NSW ESS, Victorian VEU and SA REPS. The value is delivered as a discount on the upgrade by an accredited provider through tradeable certificates, not a cash payment. What's available depends on your state, the equipment and current scheme rules.

Mostly not anymore. Certificate support has shifted to remote cabinets, which carry a customer co-payment in NSW and SA, and self-contained plug-in display fridges have largely fallen outside the schemes. You can still get a quality unit — we supply plug-in fridges and freezers to metro Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide — but it's a purchase, not a government freebie.

Yes. Even though the certificate schemes now centre on remote cabinets, we hold stock and can supply plug-in commercial display fridges and freezers, with delivery to metro Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide for $100 (ex GST). These are supplied directly and aren't rebated under the schemes — enter your postcode and we'll confirm delivery for your address.

Commercial-grade fridges and freezers on the federal GEMS register — display, upright and under-counter fridges, upright and chest freezers, and (scheme-dependent) walk-in cool rooms. Four-sided or island display cabinets are generally excluded, and you usually need to be replacing existing refrigeration.

NSW (ESS), Victoria (VEU) and South Australia (REPS) run certificate-based programs that support commercial refrigeration. Other states rely mainly on federal solar and battery incentives and don't run an equivalent fridge scheme. See our commercial energy rebates overview for the wider picture.

In some cases, yes — larger refrigeration like cool rooms and walk-in freezers can be supported, often through project-based or metered methods with measurement-and-verification requirements rather than a simple deemed activity. Eligibility and value vary by state and site.

Usually, yes. The schemes reward genuine energy savings, so most activities require replacing an existing, less-efficient unit with an eligible high-efficiency model. Installing extra fridges a business doesn't need is specifically discouraged.
