Why Adelaide LED upgrades cost so little
Lighting is one of the biggest electricity loads in commercial premises, often up to 40% of a site’s bill. Under REPS, South Australia’s energy retailers are obliged to fund energy saving activities every year, and commercial lighting is one of the activities that counts. When an accredited provider replaces your old fittings with approved LEDs, the energy your site will now save is what pays for most of the job. LED fittings also draw up to 80% less power than the fluoro and discharge lighting they replace, which is why Adelaide paybacks on long-hours sites are measured in months.
What gets upgraded in Adelaide businesses
Fluorescent tubes and battens, the classic office, shop and back-of-house upgrade, replaced with LED battens and panels. Wide 1200 x 600 ceiling panels, usually three tubes and common across Adelaide offices and retail, replaced with 50 W LED panels, and standard 1200 x 300 two-tube panels replaced with 25 W LED panels. 400 W metal halide and mercury vapour high bays and floodlights in warehouses, factories, workshops and yards, replaced with 70 W LED fittings. Car park and common-area lighting where the lights run all night. The longer your lights run, the higher the certificate value and the lower your share.
High bays are still covered in SA. The NSW scheme stopped subsidising high bay and strip light upgrades on 31 March 2026, and a lot of pages now quote that change as if it applied everywhere. It does not. REPS commercial lighting still covers metal halide and mercury vapour high bays, which makes an Adelaide warehouse one of the best lighting upgrades available in the country right now. On eligible sites the high bays and floodlights are upgraded for one $33 co-payment for the whole site. See the SA high bay and floodlight page.
LED batten lights, panels and fluoro tube replacement in Adelaide
If you are pricing LED batten lights, LED panel lights or LED tubes to replace fluorescent tubes, check what the scheme does first. Under REPS an accredited installer replaces the whole fitting with a new LED batten or panel, fitted by a licensed electrician, and the scheme incentive comes off the price up front.
| What you have now | Replaced with | Indicative price, installed |
|---|---|---|
| Fluorescent batten, 36 W tubes | 25 W LED batten | $20 each plus GST |
| Wide 1200 x 600 panel, usually three 36 W tubes | 50 W LED panel | $20 each plus GST |
| Standard 1200 x 300 panel, two 36 W tubes | 25 W LED panel | $10 each plus GST |
| 400 W high bay or floodlight | 70 W LED high bay or floodlight | $33 for the whole site, not per light |
Indicative prices through accredited providers for sites using under 160 MWh of electricity a year. Battens and panels on their own need at least 20 fittings, which does not apply on sites that also have high bays or floodlights. Eligibility and your final cost are confirmed in a written quote from the accredited provider your job is placed with.
Across Adelaide and regional SA
Upgrades run wherever the meter is: offices and strata floors in the CBD and North Adelaide, warehouses and factories through Wingfield, Regency Park, Port Adelaide, Edinburgh and Lonsdale, retail in Marion, Norwood, Modbury and Elizabeth, hospitality in Glenelg and along the coast, and businesses in Mount Barker, Murray Bridge, Gawler and the Barossa. REPS is a statewide scheme, so regional sites qualify the same way metropolitan ones do, subject to installer availability.
An SA business site with existing inefficient lighting (fluoro, halogen, metal halide, mercury vapour), upgraded through a REPS-accredited provider with approved LED products, installed by licensed electricians, with the required scheme paperwork signed before installation. Owners and tenants can both proceed. Tenants generally need landlord consent for fixed fittings.
The question we get most
Is the “free LED lights replacement” in South Australia real?
Yes, with one honest caveat. The subsidy is real, it is a South Australian government scheme, and on a typical Adelaide office, shop or warehouse it covers the large majority of the job. For a business it is not usually literally $0, because the scheme sets a minimum co-payment. On sites using under 160 MWh of electricity a year that minimum is $33, paid once for the whole site and not per fitting. A written quote showing the REPS discount and any contribution is the reliable guide.
Where the money actually comes from
REPS obliges South Australia’s larger energy retailers to deliver a set amount of energy savings each year, and they meet that obligation by funding activities at homes and businesses through accredited providers. When a provider replaces your fluoro tubes or high bays with approved LEDs, the energy your site will now save is credited to the scheme, and the provider takes that value straight off your quote. You never apply for anything or wait for a refund.

What is covered in 2026
Commercial lighting under REPS covers two things that matter to most Adelaide businesses: replacing fluorescent battens, ceiling panels and troffers with LED, and replacing metal halide or mercury vapour high bays and floodlights with LED. That second one is the reason SA warehouses and factories get such large savings, and it is still available here even though the equivalent activity has closed in NSW.
Two things worth knowing before you get a quote
If you lease your premises, fixed light fittings usually need the landlord’s sign off, and a quick email before anyone comes out saves the most common reason a lighting job stalls after quoting. And the installation has to be done by a licensed electrician using products on the scheme’s approved list, so a cheaper quote using unapproved fittings is not eligible, however good the price looks.
FAQ
Adelaide LED upgrade questions
Yes, the subsidy is real and it comes from the SA Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS). For a business it is not usually literally $0. On sites using under 160 MWh of electricity a year the scheme sets a minimum co-payment of $33, paid once for the whole site, and larger energy users make a minimum contribution of $1.70 per GJ of energy saved. The scheme value covers the large majority of the job.
Yes. SA is different from NSW here. REPS commercial lighting covers replacing metal halide and mercury vapour high bays with LED high bays, as well as fluorescent tubes and troffers. A 400 W high bay running long hours is usually the single biggest saving on an Adelaide warehouse or factory.
Far less than full price. Indicatively, through accredited providers, 400 W high bays and floodlights are upgraded for the $33 site co-payment alone, however many there are. Battens are about $20 each, wide 1200 x 600 panels about $20 each and standard 1200 x 300 panels about $10 each, plus GST. Sites using 160 MWh a year or more contribute a minimum of $1.70 per GJ of energy saved. Your written quote is the reliable guide.
There is no grant or program you apply for by that name. What people are describing is REPS, which requires SA energy retailers to fund energy saving activities at homes and businesses. You never deal with the government. You deal with an accredited provider, and the scheme value comes off your quote up front.
Most sites with old inefficient lighting: offices, retail, warehouses, factories, workshops, hospitality, medical suites, gyms, car parks and common areas. The site needs existing fluorescent, halogen, metal halide or mercury vapour lighting to replace, and the upgrade must go through an accredited provider using approved LED products.
Usually yes, but the landlord normally needs to approve it because light fittings are fixed to the building. Most landlords agree, since they end up with newer fittings and pay nothing. Getting that approval early is the single most common thing that stops a lighting job stalling after the quote.
A typical office, shop or small warehouse is usually done in a single day, often outside trading hours. Larger sites with many high bays are staged across a few visits. The paperwork is signed before installation, and the installer photographs the old and new fittings as the scheme requires.
