This Privacy Policy explains how Energy Rebate Check ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses and protects personal information you provide through this website. Energy Rebate Check is an independent service and is not a government website.

Plan comparison tool

Our energy plan comparison page offers three ways to provide usage data, with different privacy treatment:

  • Bill photo or PDF: the document you upload is transmitted securely from our server to our AI document-reading provider, Anthropic (Claude API), to extract usage and charge figures. Bills often contain personal information — your name, address, meter identifier (NMI) and account number — and while we cannot remove that information from the image you send, we never request it from the AI. The only fields extracted and used are: retailer, plan name, supply postcode, billing period dates and length, electricity usage in kWh (total, peak, shoulder, off-peak, controlled load and solar export), unit rates and daily supply charge, bill total, any discount percentage and its basis, tariff type, whether the printed rates include GST, a residential/business indicator, and a confidence note. Your name, address, NMI and account number are never requested, extracted, displayed, stored or logged. The temporary copy of your file is deleted from our server immediately after the analysis completes, a safety-net sweep removes any failed-upload remnants within 3 hours, responses are sent with no-store headers, and our server logs record technical error codes only — never bill contents. Anthropic processes the document under its commercial API terms: content submitted through the API is not used to train Anthropic’s models and is retained only for a limited period, as described in its API data-retention documentation. If you prefer, you can photograph just the usage and rates section of your bill or cover personal details before uploading — the analysis does not need them. To help prevent abuse we temporarily record a one-way hash of your IP address for rate limiting, which is automatically purged within a few hours.
  • Smart-meter (NEM12) file: processed entirely in your browser on your device. The file is never uploaded to us or anyone else, and your meter identifier is used only on the on-screen confirmation step.
  • Manual entry: the postcode and usage figures you type are used in your browser to calculate the comparison and are not submitted to us.

The comparison page does not require your name, email or phone number, and uses Google Analytics for anonymous usage statistics; bill contents and usage figures are not sent to analytics. Plan pricing shown is calculated from published Consumer Data Right product reference data.

Information we collect

Where you take part in a project assessment, we may also collect photos and documents you choose to provide — such as equipment and switchboard photos, model/rating labels, site photos and electricity bills (which can contain account details). These are used solely to assess your enquiry and prepare quotes, are stored with our form provider Jotform, are retained only as long as needed for your enquiry, and are accessible only to our team.

When you use the rebate checker or submit an enquiry, we may collect your name, email address, phone number, postcode, state, property type, the services you’re interested in, and any message you send. We may also collect basic technical data (such as analytics) to improve the site. Our enquiry forms are powered by JotForm, so information you submit through them is processed and stored on JotForm’s platform on our behalf.

How we use your information

  • To review your enquiry, assess which rebate or upgrade pathways may suit you, and prepare quotes for the services you’ve chosen.
  • To contact you about your enquiry and possible next steps.
  • To improve our website and services.

We only use your details for the purpose of reviewing and responding to your enquiry, unless you agree otherwise.

Who can see your information

Enquiries are reviewed internally by the operating business behind Energy Rebate Check (ABN 40 659 398 320). We do not sell your personal information. We will not pass your details to a third-party provider or installer unless suitable arrangements are in place and, where required, you have consented.

By submitting an enquiry and ticking the consent box, you agree to be contacted about your enquiry in line with this policy.
