Status: Available in several states (plus federal STCs)

Heat-pump hot water is one of the most widely supported upgrades. It may be subsidised under VEU (VIC), ESS (NSW) and REPS (SA), and federal STCs may apply nationally — and these can stack.

What support may be available for heat-pump hot water

A heat-pump hot water system uses ambient air to heat water and can use up to ~70% less energy than electric resistance hot water. Because of that efficiency, it’s an eligible activity under most state energy efficiency schemes when you replace an older electric or gas system.

  • Federal STCs may reduce the upfront cost (indicatively ~$800–$1,200), applied at point of sale.
  • VIC: the VEU program plus a Solar Victoria hot-water rebate may stack with STCs.
  • NSW: the ESS may provide an upfront discount via Energy Savings Certificates.
  • SA: REPS activities may apply through participating retailers.

State efficiency schemes — Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) in VIC, the Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) in NSW and the Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) in SA — deliver these as an upfront discount through accredited providers. Availability and amounts vary by state, provider and product, and change over time. Other states rely mainly on federal incentives. Verify current details before you commit.

Eligibility notes

Typically requires replacing an existing system (often 3+ years old) with an approved product on the scheme’s register, installed by an accredited provider. Some state rebates add income or property-value tests. Confirm current eligibility before installing.

Homes and businesses

Both households and businesses may access hot-water upgrades depending on the scheme. See residential or commercial rebates.
